About FCS

Fremont Community School (FCS) is a Waldorf-inspired, play-based preschool that is dedicated to giving young children every opportunity to come together and learn in a vibrant, holistic environment.

Life is a journey, and the first years of that journey are the “wonder years.” From birth through five years - early childhood - children absorb, process, and learn from every experience they come in contact with. FCS is dedicated to creating an environment that fosters the best learning opportunities for young children.

Our school’s core belief is that preschoolers should have the opportunity to be outside, in all weather, for as many hours as possible. It is in this dynamic environment that children learn the most. Finding a worm and talking about it as it wiggles in their hand teaches children far more about a worm than any book could ever teach a preschooler.

In our fully fenced garden playgrounds, children are allowed to climb, dig, run, and splash to their heart’s content. Our “toys” (tree stumps, wooden blocks, board, pallets, water, mud, etc.) are open-ended and inspire imagination, cooperation, and a constantly changing platform for creative play.

During the school day, the children in our care enjoy building, sewing, singing, story-telling, painting, baking, and learning in a myriad of other ways. We see the social and emotional well-being of the children in our care as essential for their future and strive to help them master the art of kindness.

At FCS, we see the mission of our teaching staff as educators and role models. Working alongside the children, the teachers help the children build social skills, learn about cooperation, and also to advocate for themselves. Our guiding light is kindness. The most important skills for all children to master are empathy and compassion. With these skills, children are able to navigate the many challenges facing them throughout their time in school and beyond.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide an inclusive community for children which nurtures friendships and kindness, builds confidence and independence, and cultivates curiosity and wonder through play and exploration of the natural world in a joy-filled home away from home.

Vision

Our vision is to partner with our families to cultivate communities where children can collaborate, create, and care for one another.

Values

HEARTS

By introducing children to the marvelous diversity of people, nature, and art, we foster empathy and an appreciation of beauty which promotes the emergence of the whole child.

HANDS

By empowering children to discover their physical selves in the outdoors, learning about the natural world, and the value of caring for our earth, whether it is building a fort or holding a worm, free play allows the natural capacities of the child to flourish.

MINDS

By giving children the freedom to explore the complexity and beauty of life around them, we inspire a deeper sense of knowledge. Children learn about the world by engaging in their environment.

“I never realized how passionately I would care about preschool but there is no place in Seattle I cherish more than FCS. The teachers, the mud pies, homemade lanterns and ornaments, and play mean my children come home happy, muddy, and with pure smiles of learning rather than sitting all day practicing their ABCs. There have been so many places closing this year [due to the pandemic], but FCS is so creative and dedicated to our children learning and being together in-person in a thoughtful and safe way. It means so much more than I can express.”

“The healthy social life is found, when in the mirror of each human soul, the whole community finds its reflection. And, when in the community, the virtue of each one is living.”

- Rudolf Steiner, Founder of Waldorf Education
