BabY Program (Roly Polys)

“Children who live in an atmosphere of love and warmth,

and who have around them truly good examples to imitate,

are living in their proper element.”

– Rudolf Steiner – Founder, Waldorf Education

Fremont Community School (FCS) recognizes that parents must often return to work soon after giving birth, and in Seattle this is especially true. FCS established its baby program to meet the needs of full time working parents and to offer their children the most loving, supportive atmosphere. We believe the first three years of life are the most critical for the developing human being. At no other time during a person’s life is there such rapid growth and learning and our program is carefully created to nurture the babies in its care in a gentle, warm environment.

While the Department of Early Learning mandates the ratio of babies to teachers as 4:1, we feel that there are times when babies need more caretakers, and our staffing often supports a ratio of 2:1.

When you step into our baby room you will immediately notice the soft colors, the calm and soothing voices, and the natural materials we use; all of this helps babies to feel safe and secure. Love is essential to all humans. Babies need to feel loved and supported as they transition from home to daycare and we want our families to know that they can leave their children with us and feel 100% secure.

Toddler Program (waddlers, ladybugs, and chickadees)

“If there is one piece of advice I would offer parents regarding play and early academics, it would be to relax and stop hurrying their children. Children have such deep resources for growth and learning that with good nurture and reasonable help, most will succeed wonderfully. Some will need special help and can be given it. This is a hard message to convey, however, especially in America, where we are committed to growing our children faster and better than anyone else.”

– Joan Almon, Waldorf Educator

Toddlers, ages 12 to 36 months, are wonderful, creative, and extremely busy little beings. Everything around them needs to be explored, tasted and tried out. Children in this age group need to be in an environment that allows them free access to do their exploration in the safest possible way. Our toddler classrooms were created so that the children feel this freedom and teachers know they are there to help them learn new physical and social skills.

FCS is committed to getting our toddlers outside as much as possible, rain or shine. We love that this age group has the chance to splash in a warm summer puddle or watch the autumn leaves tumble down. The great outdoors in our fully fenced yard creates a playground that is both safe and natural. Stretching our muscles, feeling the rain, and smelling the flowers feed the senses of the young children and teach them on every level.

Preschool Program (Hedgehogs)

“The need for imagination, a sense of truth,

and a feeling of responsibility –

these three forces are the very nerve of education”

– Rudolf Steiner – Founder, Waldorf Education

Preschool children, ages 3 through 5 years, like the younger years, are constantly moving and learning from the environment around them. We aim to allow this age to learn from everything they encounter, which naturally meets and exceeds the educational purposes set by leading educators.

At FCS, we see the role of our teaching staff as educators and role models. Working alongside the children, the teachers are nearby to help the children build social skills and teach them cooperation and how to advocate for themselves. Our guiding light is kindness. The most essential skills for all children to master are empathy and compassion. With these skills, children will navigate the many challenges facing them throughout their time in school and beyond. Building, digging, running, climbing, arts and crafts, and, most importantly, building social and emotional skills are just some experiences our preschoolers will enjoy.

Waldorf Education is one of our greatest inspirations, and we weave that philosophy into our curriculum, which we mingle with other current thoughts. Amongst the experiences essential for healthy early childhood education, Rudolf Steiner spoke on several occasions about including the following:

  • Love and warmth

  • Care for the environment and nourishment for the senses

  • Creative, artistic experience

  • Meaningful adult activity as an example of the child’s imitation

  • Free, imaginative play

  • Reverence for Childhood

  • Gratitude, reverence, and wonder

  • Joy, humor, and happiness
